As MUN simulations are held all over the globe, taking part in such conferences presents the unique opportunity to not only negotiate about international matters, but also being part of an international environment. Traditionally, Frankfurt School delegations participate in the local MainMUN to prepare themselves for what’s coming up next: their participation in one of the biggest MUN simulations worldwide, taking place in New York.

MainMUN

Before participating in the NMUN NY, FS students get to practice their skills in a small-scale simulation directly in Frankfurt at Goethe University, the MainMUN conference. This is a perfect chance to prepare ourselves for New York as well as to get to know some of our fellow delegates from other universities that will also participate in the NMUN in advance.

Overall, this event is a great educational platform: students learn how research properly and they get to deliver speeches and negotiate in character, thus improve their English language skills. Moreover, by meeting people from all around the world students enhance their social and intercultural competencies.

NMUN New York

The National Model United Nations (NMUN) conference in New York is organized by the National Collegiate Conference Association (NCCA) and known for being among the most professional Model United Nations conferences in the world.

The NCCA is a non-profit and non-governmental organization associated with the United Nations Department of Public Information. This explains why many NMUN conference speakers are officially associated with the UN and what makes it possible to hold the last formal sessions and the closing ceremony at the UN Headquarters using the official committee sites, like the General Assembly.

The NMUN has a longstanding tradition and dates back to 1946. Basically, the organization emerged right after the foundation of the United Nations itself. From then on it has steadily grown and college students from all over the world have come to New York City in order to discuss current issues of world politics. Last year, more than 5,000 students took part in the conference and over 120 staff members served voluntarily in order to make NMUN-NY possible.

New York

Conference Hotel

During our time in NY we’ll stay at the Sheraton Hotel that’s located right at Times Square and close to the Central Park. It is known as one of the main accommodations for both business travellers and tourists in central Manhattan.

Despite the inconveniences of staying at an extremely crowded hotel during the time of the conference, it provides us with the perfect opportunity to combine thorough committee work, getting together with other delegates from all over the world and fill in our free time with some sightseeing.

Constantly being among more than 2,500 students from all over the world ensures that the NMUN spirit is overwhelming. A major advantage for delegates is the opportunity to approach other delegations at any time to establish informal contacts and forge allies outside of the committee sessions.

Getting around in New York

Transport from JFK Airport
1) You can use public transport via air-train to Jamaica Center and
then take line E to Manhattan. Get off at the 7th Av. stop.
2) If you prefer a more comfortable way: use a NYC Yellow Cab with
a fixed price of $52 (plus additional toll charge) from JFK Airport to
every destination in Manhattan.

Transport from Newark Airport
1) Use the Newark Airport Express Bus line which costs $16 p.p.
The NAE stops at “42nd street“.
2) A taxi from Newark Airport is more expensive because there is no
flat-rate charge given. It will cost approximately $60 to $80 incl. tip
and toll charges. If you arrive in a group with more than 5 but max. 8
delegates, ask the dispatcher for a minibus, which could be cheaper
per person as a normal Yellow Cab.

Subway and Local Bus
Cabbing can quickly become expensive, so we recommend the 7-Day
Unlimited Pass for public transport. You can get one of those at the
vending machines in any metro station and refill it after the 7 days are
over.
- subway and local bus single pass: $2.50
- subway and local bus 7-Day Unlimited Pass: $30
